Music at Little Leigh

Intent

At Little Leigh Primary School, we want every child to experience the joy of music and to see themselves as a musician. By the time children leave us, we aim for them to be confident and enthusiastic musicians who have developed the knowledge, practical skills and musical vocabulary needed to listen to, create, perform and talk about music.

We want our children to experience a broad range of musical styles, traditions, cultures and time periods. Through listening, singing, playing, improvising, composing and performing, children develop their musical understanding alongside their creativity, confidence and ability to work with others.

Music is an important part of life at Little Leigh. We want children to experience the excitement of making music together and to have opportunities to share music with different audiences. Above all, we want our children to leave us with positive musical memories, an appreciation of music and the confidence and curiosity to continue exploring music in the future.

Implementation

Our music curriculum is supported by Sing Up and is designed to develop children's musical knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school. Children have opportunities to listen and respond to music, sing, play instruments, improvise, compose and perform.

Practical music-making is an important part of our curriculum. In Key Stage 1, children begin developing their instrumental skills through playing the glockenspiel. They learn how to handle and play an instrument correctly while developing important musical skills such as keeping a steady beat and playing together. As children move into Key Stage 2, they broaden their instrumental experience through instruments including recorders and ukuleles, building their confidence, control and musicianship.

Singing is an important part of school life. Children take part in a whole-school singing assembly every fortnight and can further develop their enjoyment of singing through our weekly school choir.

We also provide opportunities for children to develop their individual musical interests through specialist instrumental tuition. Children can access guitar and ukulele, piano and violin lessons, with drumming tuition being introduced this year.

Performance is an important part of children's musical experience at Little Leigh. Reception and Key Stage 1 perform their Christmas Nativity, while Key Stage 2 take part in Christmas carol performances. Year 6 finish their time at Little Leigh with an end-of-year production.

Children also have opportunities to perform beyond the school. Our choir has taken part in Young Voices and the Royal Cheshire Show and performs within our local community, including at the village hall and during Christmas visits to care settings. Key Stage 2 pupils also have opportunities to participate in events such as Northwich Sings and Weaverham Music Festival.

Through classroom learning, instrumental tuition, singing and performance, we aim to give all children opportunities to make music, develop their skills and experience the enjoyment of sharing music with others.
